Ameraucana are very similar to the araucana chicken because they both have pea combs and produce blue colored eggs, although they have many differences and are completely different breeds. Ameraucana have full tails, muffs, beards, and slate  black legs. The Ameraucana comes in several colors being white, black, blue, wheaton, brown and lavender. Although the ABC (Ameraucana Breeders Club) does not recognize all colors. I you have mixed or other colors that do not meet their requirements then they are considered Easter Eggers.

The Ameraucana Breeders Club defines the Easter Egg chicken, or Easter Egger, as any chicken that carries the blue egg gene, but doesn’t completely meet any breed description as defined in the APA standards. Even if a bird that carries the blue egg gene meets an APA (American Poultry Association) standard of breed description, but doesn’t meet a variety description and doesn't breed true at least 50% of the time it is described as an Easter Egg chicken. The APA's Standard of Perfection contains breed and variety descriptions of all recognized standard breed poultry in North America. This specifically means that if your bird does not meet their color requirement, it is considered an Easter Egger.

Most Easter Egg chickens are mixes or (mutts) which carry the blue egg gene. True Ameraucanas are rare and generally cannot be prchased from big hatcheries or feed stores.

When deciding on Ameraucana as your breed of choice be sure to contact a reputable breeder if  being true to a breed is important to you.

I personally love the Lavender color and the tempermant with these birds. They are definately the most friendly and docile chickens we have in Ameraucana. The lavender color in Ameraucana is still in the project stage and not yet recognized by the Ameraucana breeders association (ABA) but is in the process of getting there. They will breed true but still need to be bred back to black to continue in the effort to bring these lovely birds closer to standard of breed and to better the blue egg gene of the ameraucana.

Why does the lavender need to be bred to black only? Why not other colors?

Hi, I would like to purchase some ameracaunas (not bantams).  I would love to get some hatching eggs or even chicks.  Also I would like to get some copper marans and welsummers.  Could you tell me about the olive egger chicken?  Do you sell any of these chickens or eggs or do you know of anyone who does?  Thanks so much!

I will have wheaten/blue wheaten soon. As far as the others I can find them for you. The olive egger is produced from a mblue egg gene carrying bird crossed to a dark brown color egg gene bird which best would be a welsummer or Maran as you are looking for. Are you wanting eggs on those breeds as well Thanks ‘

I read that Ameracaunas are typically very friendly and don't mind being handled.  True?  Any reputable breeders in central North Carolina?

  7. Joseph says:

  8. Gabby says:

    Dear Sirs/Madams,

I hope to buy Ameraucana eggs from you but I wonder you will be able to send it to south Korea.
I think it is hard to pack the eggs and you have to get a quarantine certificate for exporting.

Anyway I will appreciate if you send prompt reply to me.

    Best Regards,
    Alex Ha
